BMW 328i auto power coming in and out in waves

Hello All

My 1997 328i auto has recently developed a bit of a problem! It is down in power and not pulling from standstill as it should. There seems to be a second delay before it really wants to get going. This has been a problem at a couple of junctions when needing to pull out in a hurry! Anything belowe 3000rpm and its quite flat but after that it seems fine. The engine runs fine and it doesn't splutter or bog down when pulling away.....just under powered. it is the same in economy mode, manual mode or sport. I have also noticed that it is a bit down on mid range pull when cruising. When you apply more throttle the mpg gauge below the rev counter seems to move up and down slightly in 1-2 second waves and the power increases and de-creases at the same time.

The car is standard and has no engine modifications and doesn't seem to be using any more petrol than usual. I am quite a steady driver and when going easy its quite hard to notice, but when you want to give it a little its just not all there. the kickdown on the auto box works fine and once its dropped down a gear or two and the revs are up it sems ok.

I am hoping it may be a faulty sensor and nothing to do with the auto box...has anyone else come across this problem before? Any advice would be great.
