I have this cherry 1995 318is with 45,000 original miles. A fun car but lacking in oomph. I'm having an updated chip put in the car right now.
I'd like your thoughts on putting a turbocharger on the car.
Good idea?
Bad idea?
What make and model of turbocharger?
What kind of cost? (I would have a BMW mechanic install the unit)
What bout the downsides?

Turbo's aren't a bad idea but they need to be done correctly. If they are and you take care of them the car will run great, have a big kick in the butt when the turbo kicks in, and should be reliable. Doing it wrong, well I think we've all seen the baggy pants backwards hat wearing moron and his Honda civic/boombox on the side of the road with a blown motor.

I have seen a video just like that on YouBoob, or is that You Tube?

You need to decide what you want the car to do. Is this long term street use where you need low down and midrange power? Or is this going to be a track car that you rev the nuts off of and need power at the upper end of the rev band? Then you need to get a turbo map of what you're looking to put on. Go Here

>>My little Em is in the shop having all the little things fixed, so that she is almost showroom, except for the stereo. I had a top-notch company put a new system in her that cost me a little over $5K. I have an Alpine MP3 player that fits beautifully where the cassette player used to be...connected to an iPod in the glove compartment. The stereo also plays bluetooth music and relays my phone signal. I have two JL Audio 100W speakers with, full crossover to the tweeters in the door, in the kick panels and two Alpine 100W speakers with attached tweeters in the back. In the trunk there is a 500W JL Audio sub-woofer, installed in a custom-built enclosure that takes up a section of the left rear trunk area. It's almost invisible as it's covered with the original trunk liner carpeting. Finally I have a 900W JL Audio amplifier on the drop-down wall of the trunk. I can remove the amp and sub-woofer in about five minutes if I need to.
I have to say it's a big kick to pull up to a light in my little BMW and blow the ears off a car full of teens: lmao ....with rock or opera or reggae...anything but rap!
