Don't guess, if the car is a US spec vehicle do the pedal stomp test ( http://www.pelicanparts.com/BMW/tech...de_Reading.htm ) and see what codes pop up. Otherwise pull the codes using INPA or Carsoft - could be a DME relay or Crank Position Sensor but replacing parts systematically is an expensive and fruitless way of fixing the problem.
