help please!!

having a problem with my e36 2.3L, car is very hard to start and when it is running there is a whistling sound coming from under the intake which leads me to believe there is a vacuum leak the car wont acelerate and will only go up to 2 grand and stay there, anybody have any advice as i dont want to pull the engine bay apart to find its something easily accessable

Look at the idle control valve... that hose may have come loose, or icv might need to be cleaned or replaced. I had the same problem. U can see the configuration in a Bentley repair manual for the e-36. That might help...Cyy

cyy is right it could be the icv or pipes conecting it if not check the oil breather/seperater under the inlet manifold that conects to the inlet ad rocker cover and crank case...... IREE

Thanks guys for your advise much appreciated, managed to find the icv and removed it and cleaned it, car will start ok now but still not accellerating properly, would you think that the coils are playing up or the o2 sensor? its really anoying me once the car gets up to revs say 3-4 grand it will take off but below that its very sluggish
any thoughts.

Did the whistle go away? If not it's the cyclone separator aka the "hooter" valve. Its the oil separator under the intake that acts in the PCV system.

as i said could be the breather if not maybe cat if fitted that also stops the car from reving as the exhaust gas cant escape defo not the lamda as that just does the fueling side ie you could remove them and it would still run and rev fine just fuel would be up the wall..........IREE

thanks guys for the advise, just an update i took the car to a specialist and hooked it up to a computer turns out the crank sensor was shot so as the guy was telling me it gives out the signs of other things causing a problem $870 to fix and service.
is now going like a rocket but as it always goes fix one thing another pops its head up to really anoy you, water pump and idler bearings gone another $900 ahh the joys of owning a beemer
