E36General discussion and technical help for (E36) 1992-1999 3 series cars. 318, 323, 325, 328.
Any tried and tested methods for fixing a dented rim? I have a 3" flat on the edge, it's aluminum alloy. It seems to ride fine, just wanna get it back to shape. Potholes at 70mph . .

Piece of wood and a hammer. If its on the inside try a adjustable wrench and bend it back with that. Its not reccomended to beat your rims with a hammer beucase it suppoustly weakens them but thats a way to bend your rim back.
Around here if you hit a pothole and it causes any damage to your car, you're supposted to pull over immediately and get a police officer to come out and write up a report. If the police officer says it was indeed the pothole that caused the damage, the city will write you a check for the cost of repairs on your car. (then they'll fix the pothole, haha)
if you are going to attempt to beat your rim back in shape, just be careful and don't try to go to far with it. If it is a very large dent, I would just pay the money to fix it cause most likely you will just do more damage than good, and then it might never be able to be straightened correctly.

Here's a shot . .
It looks like mostly lip that was damaged, and hopefully it won't be too hard to coax back into shape. Definitely won't go crazy with it though.
ouch thats probable going to be more than 100.. cause the bend is on the outer face of the rim, meaning its gunna need to be repainted after its straightened. A local guy here does straightening for 50-75 if its an inside bend, and 125-150 for straightening and refinishing.

Thats an easy bend to bend back. I suggest finding something hard to beat on that has the same angle % as the rim so you cna beat it back perfectly round. You could always get a measurement and cut a 2 by 4 into the shape.
