How to remove rear view mirror?

My mirror goes jittery after hitting a bump and I have to reajust, but the next bump it will happen again. The ball may be going bad. How do I take it off without breaking it?

From what I remember, it slides off. There will be a silver piece that stays on the windshield.

I have the same issue. Wondering if there is a way to just tighten it?
