car bogs down please help

hey guys i have a 1997 318i.
I just recently bought this car but the problem is that the car shoots after2000 rpm. initially the car bogs down when i accelerate it but then shoots right after it crosses 2000rpm. its very irritating because i cant cruise at rpms lower than 3000.
also the idle drop is very delayed as in it when i lift my foot of the gas it takes a while for the idle to drop. it takes around 10-12 seconds for the idle to come back to normal. due to this the milage has also worsened.

i hope you guys could help me out with this please.

Sounds like an air leak. Check the rubber between the MAF and throttle plate, and look for broken vac lines.

I have a 1997 328 with 200K mi and have had a problem for some time with jery acceleration. It was more pronounced under load (low rpm high gears). I new it was a air leak just where. When I replaced the plugs I noticed a oil SEEP (not a leak) in the plug wells and around the valve cover gasket. I did not have any oil leaking down the side of the head or block!
I replaced the valve cover gasket and the acceleration was baby bottom smooth. It was drawing in enough air a low rpm/high load to screw up air/fuel mixture.
If you disconnect the battery it will allow the ECU to reprogram the adaptive sooner.
This may apply to jery acceleration or eratic idle because it's an air leak on the induction system.
I had no check engine lights or fault codes.
