Unhappy Auto trans stuck in 1st!! why!???

I recently replaced the waterpump on my sons 97 e36 which overheated. Car ran fine for a couple of blocks running through all gears. After stopping and restarting, it only stayed in first from that point on. Went home slowly and checked the trans oil level and noticed alittle low so I changed the oil and the filter thinking all would be alright. NOT!

Does anyone here know if theres any sensor that would prevent it to slay in this gear. It does go into reverse. All dealers I talked to just want for me to take it into their shop. I am one of those who are broke at the moment. So can anyone help? pleaszzzee...

What the relationship might be between overheating/replacing the water pump and an automatic transmission I have no idea, but this might provide some hint http://www.continentalimports.com/ser_ic100076.html . Good luck.

Thanks for the link. After reading just a portion of it, I feel like it's definitely an electronic problem. I just wished I had the equipment and knowledge to make the fix.

Hopefully, someone else had or has heard of this problem. Many thanks.

Assuming that you have replaced the transmission fluid with the correct fluid type and have filled it as per this guide http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/tech...Fluid_Auto.htm
the most likely cause is a stuck shift solenoid. Double check that the cause is not air in the cooling system that is preventing the temperature sensor signalling he DME/EGS that the engine has warmed up as this is also a possibility.

Thanks so much for responding. I had topped off the trans fluid per that site and recently removed the thermostat from the cooling system thinking it will be okay being we're in Florida, but nothing has changed. I bled the air through the top of the radiator near the cap, is that the way it's done and good/bad idea? also, could you tell me where the shift solenoid is?

The shift solenoid is inside the transmission case and ususally requires a full transmission service to correct. You should not run the car without a thermostat however as it will result in the sensors keeping the car in closed loop mode, which does delay shifting.

Attached is a link which shows the internals. Can you tell me which one your talking about? 1st-2nd sensor? Also, read somewhere that it could be a pulse sensor located on top of the trans. Any thoughts on that?
