Autotransmission type
Hey fellows
Can anyone tell me what type of transmission does my 1993 320i auto transmission has? is it a ZF 4hp22 or 4l30e transmission or something else? I am pretty sure it is a five speed transmission...thanks

I believe any of two or three different automatic transmissions were used, but how they were distributed throughout the production run I have no idea. You might have some luck by taking the VIN to a dealer or checking realoem.com/bmw online. If no luck there, I think you can find out which one you have by getting under the car and checking the side of the transmission case, the identifier might be stamped there.

Also, (it's been a while since I was in the auto trans class) I believe the first number indicates the number of gears the tranny has. 4=4speed, you may however feel what seems like 5th but that would be the torque converter clutch lock up, done for economy purposes.
