Electronic shift control
hi fellows,
I have a question regarding my 1993 320i.....sometimes while driving I get this yellow warning light which looks like an exclamation mark ! inside a circle...which is for electronic shift control failure....at that time there is a loss of power like the vehicle is in the wrong gear....I checked one of the E30 model manuals and it says to pull over and switch of the engine and wait and start again...after doing so the warning light doesnt appear and normal operation is restored but again after sometime it comes back....initially i thought it could be happening due to excess load while going uphill but then at times i have driven on a steep road without any problem
please explain to me what is the problem in detail and is going to be expensive to get it fixed...thanks

You got a code to go with that? Could be any number of things, loose connection at any of a dozen points, intermittently bad sensor, solenoid or tranny controller dying. Maybe low fluid, or contamination. Is there anything specific you or the car does right before it happens? Maybe at the same point in a drive with a particular grade?

well...as much as i can remember the problem appeared only when i was going up hill or down hill...but like as I said before there were times when I was going on steeper hills in the normal "D" (auto transmission) mode and nothing happened...
Anyways I will check out the transmission fluid level and the code
Thanks

Well, obviously there's an issue with the pressure regulator :-) (circuit that is). Could be a sensor issue, could be a wiring issue. With it only happening on a particular grade though the first thing I'd do is take a look at the wiring harness, perhaps at a particular angle the harness moves and breaks contact throwing the code and causing the problem, but on the level or different grades it goes away because it isn't at the right angle to make it happen. It's possible you have a pressure sensor that's going away, or you could in fact have a regulator that's beginning to fail. Start with the harness, make sure all the connectors are clean, routed and secured in their factory positions. Then go from there
