This can have lots of reasons. Do a visual check of all air hoses around the engine and then go to the dealer for diagnostics.
One other thing you can do by yourself is disconnect the volume air flow sensor while the engine is running - if the engine starts going crazy then the sensor is ok, if not, it is blown.
In my case the cause was the lambda sensor.
Very rough explanation of its function:
it measures amounts of some chemicals in the exhaust fuels and sends this info to the engine's control unit. When the info is wrong, the unit can send wrong amounts of gas and air into the valves causing weird behavior, i.e. rough idle..
The best way to check the lambda probe is to go to the dealer for diagnostics - lambda probe errors will show up on their computer. In my case the lambda sensor reported wrong values only when the engine ran over about 4000rpm so when I returned after a long trip on a highway (lots of errors), the idle was all messed up, but running around the city (not many errors) it was just fine.

WTF is this thing called? I have been trying to find a replacemebnt, and it seems that NO one knows what the hell it's called. Been trying to find a replacement online, but again the "naming" of the part is different depending on who you are going through.

It called a LAMBDA probe or sensor in some countries and on some makes/models. It's called and O2 or Oxygen sensor in other countries. 85 325e should call it an oxygen sensor. As discovered in an earlier thread the 316 calls it a LAMBDA. Does the same thing, compares oxygen levels in the exhaust stream with oxygen levels in the atmosphere and then sends that info to the computer which determines fuel trim. Or is it a different part? can you reference the number in the diagram Jarda posted?
