E36General discussion and technical help for (E36) 1992-1999 3 series cars. 318, 323, 325, 328.
Ok so when I bought my car it needed a few things. Water pump, Fan clutch, fan blade, radiator. I replaced them all myself to save so money and for fun. Not that hard anyway. Okay so I bought the car in like August and did all this work. Everything’s been fine since then. Until tonight. Went to the store and when I got home it my engine was smoking im like ahh . So I pop it and the air smells of antifreeze. My Fan blades are completely gone well there are bits and pieces about the engine and there are some good dents in the radiator. Oh and there was a steady flow of antifreeze from the bottom of the radiator and my coolant is pretty much gone. (I had checked the coolant about 3 days ago and it was fine) WHY did this Happen? PLEASE HELP! I can replace the fan blade and probably need to get a new radiator (not to big of a deal) but I just don't want it to happen again!
It sounds like your fan already deleted itself, and took the bottom of your radiator with it. This is unfortunately all to common with these older cars. The old fans get brittle, and break off at high rpm's. A new one will probably take another 10 years to break. You will sadly need a new radiator from the sounds of it, and a new fan. You can use this opportunity to do the clutch fan delete mod if you like, either way you need to get a fan in there.
yeah it dose suck. i bought the fan from a bmw dealership maybe they might give me a refund haha i found the piece with the bar code on it. somehow. but i doubt it i mean come its a bmw dealership. yeah fan delete is what im doing. anyone got a good site i can order it from. also is there any DIY for the fan delete?
did the fan clutch remove. all is well. i actually think i can feel some gain from not having the heavy mech fan on. or it could just be i haven't driven in awhile haha
