Question Some noises & shaking & ...??

i have a 97 318i..i got it in a trade ... trading & used vehicles equals..problems... im not sure what mine is, when i start driving down the road it'll sometimes stay at like 30-40mph and make this weird noise & shakes a bit...it almost sounds like your driving over a bridge that vibrating noise and the little shake you get from it ...im thinking it could be a transmission problem, but could be wrong... when it does that i shift (its an automatic) it into 3rd and back into drive and it drives fine... its really hard to gain speed when this happens also.. if anyone knows anything that may relate to my problem PLEASEEE let me know!
(-was told by a friend it could need a transmission flush??)
THANKS!!

From what you describe it doesn't sound suspension or engine related, but (sad to say) the transmission. Check the service records (if there are any) to see what kind of service the transmission has received. Also, check the transmission fluid level, and if there are any leaks of same. Maybe it's just a matter of getting rid of old fluid and replacing with fresh, as well as checking for speed sensor and wiring harness connections (vulnerable if fluid has been leaking on them). Beyond that, it might be the seals are leaking.

+1 on checking the tranny fluid. If you don't know when it was changed last, you should really just have the fluid/filter changed anyways.

if it's not that, look at your cats, I know on mine I had a loose catalytic converter heat shield and it kinda sounds like what you are describing
