Clunking Noises When Going Over Bumps!

So I'm driving today with the windows down and the music off something I haven't done since Sept 2004 and you'd be surprise how much you hear from your car...

anyway I noticed that everytime I went over bumps there was a "clunking metallic sound" from the under carriage. The best way to describe it is to liken it to 3 or 4 steel pipes in bag that is shaken up and you hear the pipes knocking about....

I'm wondering of this is my bearings, suspensions....but I don't know...I checked my undercarriage and everything is well connected...no lose exhaust pipes or metal stuff dragging...

I also noticed that my brakes were squealing but only when I slowed the car down at high speeds...There was no squeals at low speeds braking and no squeals when I stopped hard and mashed the brakes.

What is this about? Is it the Pads or the Calipers? I just got my brake fluids and oil serviced and changed on 4/27/2005!

take a rubber mallet and smack your muffler a couple times. check the exhaust hangers and the muffler itself. In my last car i had a loose piece in my muffler i think because it rattled.

huh?

so its not a bearings, suspension thing huh?

i guess i'll do that...smacking the muffler...thing...and i'll see..

i think that would be your shock mounts

oh yeah, btw those are really cheap and a very common problem w/e36

could just be your boots are worn out

or your car is a piece...j/k It's probably rear shock mounts....very easy to replace...

I don't really agree with the strut mount. If you've ever been in an e36 when it goes it's more of a solid thud than clanking. I do have a metal clanking noise that fits your description. My friends shop put it up on a lift and thought it was a loose heat sheild. Haven't gotten around to removing the heat shield to find out though.

I'd suggest putting the car up on ramps/jack-stands, and like someone mention above, start tapping around with a rubber hammer.

it might be your bushings. check them to see if they are worn.

Thanks...guys but you'll never guess what it was.....
Actually my tire jack was loose in the spare tire well at the back and my emergency hammer was loose as well and I guess they were having a party everytime I drove over bumps so that is were the clanging came from.....

I know I know duh.......
