How long do coil packs last?
I realize my M44 motor is different than most here, but how long can we expect coils to last? Is there some test to determine if mine are working to capacity?

my old BMW had failing coil packs when i bought it, and had 230,000 miles. i bought used coil packs on ebay for $10 a piece and the car ran perfectly till it was totalled.
yours aren't working when you car misfires and stuff
Testing the coils on an M44 is quite different and more elaborate than the M42 & the 6cyl engines. Also, if even one coil is bad on the M44, all 4 will need to be replaced. That is to say that if you had coil failure, your car would be running really rough, or not at all. Get yourself a Bentley manual, it explains the whole procedure in detail. There really isn't an excuse to not have an e36 Bentley these days . . they're everywhere for free or little cost.

Good to know. I have a copy of the manual. I'll check it out.
