how to install main belt

main belt snapped on my 1997 328is. I picked up a new one to replace it and several hours later, I still can't get it on. It is routed correctly per the instructions on my bentley manual. If you look at the picture below, this is the drive belt tensioner, which if I use a 16mm socket on the pulley part, I can loosen it, but it only "wobbles" around and I can't get the belt to go over it. Am I missing something simple? I verified that it is indeed the correct size belt, but no luck.

Any help is appreciated!

Not sure what you're referring to, but you can either put a socket over the molded nut (black arrow), or pop off the plastic cap (blue arrow) and use an 8mm Allen key on the bolt behind it. Turning either will allow you to slip the belt over the pulley.

loosen the tensioner? Sounds like you are turning it the wrong way.
