When I bought my e36,the check brake light circuit warning display was on, so I had to replace the brake switch, replaced the struts & shocks, I had a loud banging noise coming from the rear of the car, so I had to replace the rear trailing arm bushings, & the check engine light was on , So I purchased a OBDII SCANNER & found large Emissions Evap.leak in the Evap. expansion tank!!! Also Check to see if the thermostat housing is plastic & replace ,also change the waterpump because of a plastic impeller! But that was about it!!!! The car is pretty much perfect now!!!

^^ Sounds like that covers a majority of the general look outs. Mine included replacing cooling hoses and thermostat and housing. Also rear shock mounts. My right rear was not in good condition. (ie. not so attatched, lol). There are plenty of threads to look thru as well with images and such of what to look out for. These though that were mentioned are quite common.

"pretty much perfect", that is, until you get your wheels on!

when i bought mine (the green one below) i replaced the radiator, because the plastic nozzle/mouth thingy that the main upper coolant hose clamped onto had deteriorated.

My car also had this squatting problem, but i fixed it by buying thicker spring seats from turner motorsport, new springs and shocks, and a rear camber adjustment. and that's about it so far.
