BMW flash code
Procedure for Acquiring Flash Codes from your BMW
Instructions by Ben Thongsai, bimmers.com, inc.
Note: Your BMW must have Motronic version 1.1 or higher. Motronic 1.0
cars do not have self diagnostic flash code capability (as evidenced by the
lack of a Check Engine light).
I. Determine which version of the Motronic is in your BMW by
consulting the DME Application Guide (or see table below).
II. Sit in the driver's seat.
III. Turn the igntion to the On position, but do not start the car.
IV. Immediately depress the accelerator fully and release fully 5 times
in quick succession.
V. Wait a couple of seconds.
VI. The Check Engine light will flash once, then start to blink. All codes
are comprised of 4 digits. The number of blinks corresponds to the
fault code. For example, ON, pause, ON ON, pause, ON ON, pause,
ON ON, off would be a 1222.
VII. Each four digit code will be flashed sequentially. When the codes
start to repeat, all stored codes have been displayed.
VIII. Turn the ignition Off.

My code flashes 1221 "EGO Sensor #1...the car runs excellent as normal...Is it urgent to repair this right away? What's the typical cause, defective oxygen sensor, power relay or fuel mixture/combustion problem? Cost of repair?

BMW Flash Codes
I tried it on my 1999 323IS and it failed to work. Do this work on a 1999 E36 323IS and if not is there something like it in the 1999 model?
By the way, that's some good info.
Thanks

this only works on OBD1. in 1996 all auto manufacturers, including BMW, have switched to OBD2 and this procedure does not work on OBD2 systems.

Question Re: Flash Codes
After reading your post I wanted to see how this worked on my 95 M3. The check engine light has not been on, however, when I initiated the flash code procedure I received a series of 1226 codes. Each of them was followed by a steady light (the series would go 1226- steady light (2 secs) 1226- steady light (2 secs).....) This cycled more than 6 times this way and then I shut off the ignition. I know this is a knock sensor 2 code, however, is this a problem (as the check engine light is not on and has not come on)? Could these be old code that have not been cleared? Is there a way to reset the OBD? Any insight you can give me here would be greatly appreciated.

you can disconnect the battery for a few minutes. this will clear all codes from memory. if the issue is still present the code will come up again after a few trips. so after clearing memory, drive it for a few days and check for codes again.
