E36General discussion and technical help for (E36) 1992-1999 3 series cars. 318, 323, 325, 328.
All E36 are slightly lower or lean towards the passenger side of the vehicle. Weight of the battery and fuel tank are both factors in this, but the primary reason is in the design. BMW engineers were competent enough to compensate for the weight of the driver (assuming most people drive a 3 series without passengers). When driver weight of approximately 150lbs. is factored in the car sits at the same height on both sides.

If it doesn't feel right might want to check the shock on that side. Give that corner of the car a good shove down if the doesn't settle on the up and goes back down again its probably a blown shock (replace in pairs).

When I replaced the stock springs with the H&R sport springs. I found the original left rear coil spring broken @ the last coil! Just something to think about!

That happened to a friend of mine too JohnnyB. I dont think at all this is the problem the OP is having though. What he described of drivers side being 1 inch higher than passenger side is nothing more than good old E36 lean. OP you have nothing to worry about.
