now without sounding as completely stupid as i feel lol, where is the oil filter cannister on the 318 engines? ive been under the car with a torch and i cant see it.

The filter cap should come off with bare hands. I don't think you'd be able to get a traditional filter wrench on there anyway. That cap is plastic. A filter wrench could crack it.
Those rubber gripper things made for taking off stubborn jar lids might help if it's stuck on there. Rubber gloves would be a good idea too.
Once off, make sure and install all the new gaskets and don't over tighten the cap. It gets put on finger tight, just enough to make the seal and then just snug.

There is a special tool that looks like a big socket that fits over the end of the housing . You put a standard 3/8" ratchet on this to turn it. I picked mine up at a local auto parts store for under $10.

I know the 6 cylinder E36s are like that. Maybe mine broke off the top. I don't have it.
