Rubbing noise in steering column??..
Has anyone had this problem? Whenever you turn the steering wheel you get a rubbing sound? My mechanic says it could be some sort of spring or ring inside the column. He wants to take the sterring wheel off to get into it. Any other way to get this fixed? Also where or how do I get to the cabin filter? , I'd like to replace it myself, thanks!

i know what you mean my 94 325i does the same thing, but it doesnt really bother me too much. there is prob nothing wrong with it, could just be the sterring wheel rubbing against plastic or something.
my e30 made a rubbing nise after i replaced the steering rack.
turns out i had to lube the bushing/insulator where the collum came into the car. Remove the covering from above you pedals and put some grease where the collum comes into the cabin. Also get under the car and do the same from the other side.

It's not leather on leather, although that sounds kind of interesting , but it's something behind the steering wheel itself, not in the column, but where the column and the steering wheel come together. Max 39 might be right, I'll need to get me a skinny torx screwdriver to get the cover of the steering and see what it might be.
