Blower resistor - again ('93 e36)

Yes I know it's not a new topic. But maybe there is an answer I've missed? Mine is a '93 with A/C not climate control. The pack is a green one made by Behr - and I've replaced it twice. First time the replacement lasted a couple of weeks. The second time it lasted nearly six months and I'm about to replace again. My supplier said he had a new or alternative unit made by Febi - but has changed his mind and sent another Behr unit.

Couple of questions.

1. This is obviously not a unique problem - is there a fix without replacing the fan? It seems as if one or maybe more of the resistors which are switched in on positions other than 4 must be blowing. It has been suggested that the fan might have started drawing too much current - why it should I don't know - seemed to be working just fine.

2. Is there an alternative manufacturer?

Thank you in advance!
