gearbox/transmission

I have a really dumb question; is there a difference between a gearbox and the transmission?

no.

gearbox is a general term. Transmission is a gearbox for power transfer with an engine. where as gearbox is for any power transfer i believe.

thanks for the reply i wasnt sure, by the way i had a previous thread on here about it taking it longer to get out of the gears when driving after the car has been sitting over night. The reply got back were saying that I need a new gearbox (auto) The car had the transmission and torque converter rebuilt not oo long ago. I thought that it does this because the car was cold and the tranny fluid is not warmed up yet. Figure I get a second opinion. Thanks for your help

hmm.

your fluid shouldnt be so thick as to cause the transmission to not go into gear. So maybe they screwed something up on the rebuild? Take it back and tell them to fix it?

my automatic takes a little longer to shift when it is cold, as I found out today. If it still does it after say 15 mins of driving then I would definetely look into it. My auto will be gone in about a week though anyways
