ECU swaps

I have a 1996 318i touring, and was wondering if it was possible to swap the ecu to that of one from a coupe? or if there were any that would give more performance without the need to have the exsisting one remapped/chiped
i nkow this may seem futile to the american subscribers to this forum but in the UK petrol (or gas as you call it) costs around $2.10 per litter or around $11 a gallon so any help with performance without extra cc,s is much appreciated .
slow but happy
