E36 1994 heat only works on full blast. please help!

Hey everyone. Today when I was driving in my E36, it was frigid cold, so i went to turn on the heat, but when i turned the knob to number 1, nothing came out, same for 2 and 3, but when i turn to 4, the heat comes on full blast, as its supposed to. I dont get it, when i turn it to the others, i can hear this electronic noise as if the heat is gonna come out, but it doesnt. Please help me! Thanks

Your final stage, aka blower resistor has failed. They usually go for around 100 bucks.
If your going to replace it yourself its on the drivers side, down under by the gas pedal. You need to removed the under dash kick pannel to access it.
If you take it to a dealer they should charge you no more then 1.5 hr. I only charge 1 hour to do them.

thanks for the info. i ran it by my mechanic friend to ask how much he would charge, since i dont trust myself haha. He's the one i bought the car from and he said they just replaced the blower motor resistor in fall of 2006.
