Power = $$$$$$$, I'm sad to say.............

I've not done it to my BM, but I think a chip on a 325i would give you some extra horses; other small things would be an air intake and performance exhaust. Those three things combined, once tuned up, are supposed to give more power. Hope someone here who's done it can clarify that.

A 325i is powerful enough anyway, so if it were me, I would just drive her as is, or if I really wanted something, would have a full exhaust system, but they don't come cheap if you're on a budget.

Start first with prophylactic maintenance, assuming the car is running well right now. Have the cooling system checked and serviced, replace the water pump. Full tuneup, change plugs, filters, fluids, etc. Take a couple of weeks/months to feel out the car, its strengths and weakpoints. Have a solid strong running car first before you boost performance, that way nothing bites you in the a** later.

^+1,000,000, do some maintence 1st and make sure it keeps running well before spending money on other things. I would suggest a chip maybe intake and exhaust, those are probably your cheapest power mods but remember your dealing with a BMW. I would start with a chip and suspension myself.

I have a '95 325i. first question: is your car manual? if not, ditch the car and get a manual one.

The easiest, most cost-effective first upgrade would definitely be an intake. A good K&N kit or a AfE kit will cost around $250. It adds a few horses, and that great intake sound. I have a cheap intake system on my car, (which i want to upgrade one day) and i love the power and the sound it produces, especially under heavy acceleration.

An exhaust would not help so much, unless you are getting long tube headers. Mufflers do next to nothing except add sound.

The greatest upgrade i think would be a lightweight flywheel. (if your car is manual). By simply reducing rotating mass, you free up nearly 20 horsepower from your engine.

A lightweight flywheel may run up to $500 though, but as was mentioned before, power = $$

If you are looking to do cheap HP mods, you should have bought a Mustang or another POS. BM's are pretty expensive when it comes to HP mods. Chips are $200 - $500. Exhaust is at least $500 for a stocker, things add up pretty quick. I'm also a college student and $100 has become $10000 to me. It's sad, I used to not be that way. I guess three years in college will do that to you. I would maintain your car first, and if you want to spend the little money you have left on your car, go for it.
