help with throttle

to anyone with an e36 with a 2.8 (mine is a 99), with a 5-speed: my throttle sitcks somewhat and this is my first bmw. i found what i thought was the throttle body, but it must be something else b/c when i pull the little cable, the engine doesn't rev up. anyone who has had a stuck throttle or knows EXACTLY where my throttle cable and throttle body are, please help me.

hey tom i have a 97 2.8 and ive had all that apart before so i hope i can be helpful. i think the cable you are pulling on is for the cruise control. i dont know if you can operate the throttle easily from under the hood, i think its in a bad spot for that. more importantly, when you say sticking..be more specific. do you mean simply that when you rev the engine the rpms settle back down slower than you would think they should? or are they actually holding at a steady rpm for a moment and then dropping? the somewhat slow drop in rpms is normal, my car and a lot of others i know of are the same way and are all running properly.

The throttle body comes off of you Mass Air Flow Sensor/Contraption. The flow of air show go like this: front of car, air box and filter, mass air flow, large rubber tube (you should be able to fit your arm through it) and then the throttle body. The throttle body has two cable coming from it from the rear of the car side. I haven't worked on my car in months, so you have to forgive me with being vague.

the car's throttle response is, as any bmw, awesome. but when you take it above 4500 from idle (parked in neutral), then let off the throttle completely, it drops back down to 1200 before dropping back to idle...its like the throttle is sticking at low rpms. Also, sometimes the acts like it needs a new clutch, but it doesnt--again, the throttle is sticking. I've pounded the clutch over & over, and it doesn't miss a beat.

^^^ What's wrong with that? I mean, how long does it stay at 1200? Mine idles at around 900, so that's not to far off.

But, if you really feel like it, you could take the throttle body off and clean it. I did that a while back and now it feels like the car isn't even on when it idles.

It's not a cable sticking, it's the idle valve catching the engine from falling to quickly to idle. Try cleaning the idle valve, it may help a bit.

alright i wanna make sure i get this right. I know there's separate idle and main jets in a carborator, but this car has fuel injection, so where's my idle valve?

It's nestled up under the intake about midway. There will be an air duct branching off of he main intake duct before the throttle body. Follow it to the idle valve.
