E36General discussion and technical help for (E36) 1992-1999 3 series cars. 318, 323, 325, 328.
Hey! I'm new and have been asking a lot of questions about my (new to me) '96 328i...
The codes I pulled from my computer (current, not just stored) are P0170 (Fuel Trim, Bank 1), P0173 (Fuel Trim, Bank 2), P1188, and P 1189.
Does anybody know what the last two mean? Apparently, they're BMW codes... I'm trying to track down a more comprehensive repair manual with these, but don't have one yet. Help me if you can! :-)
The symptoms are a searching/surging idle (up and down), which is sometimes rough... which occasionally leads to initial acceleration being a little jerky. Overall power is still good, and fuel economy hasn't taken a dramatic dive yet... but we'll see. Anyhow, if anybody knows about those last two codes, fill me in. Thanks! Have a good one, ladies and gentlemen.

This means that the 02 sensor for bank 2 is reporting that the mixture is off and has to "trim" the computer to run richer (or leaner) to get back to a stoichiometric ratio of 14.1:1 Air:Fuel mixture.
A lean condition could be caused by a vacuum leak, bad fuel pump/filter/regulator or malfunctioning MAF. Rich conditions could be a stuck injector or a bad MAF.
What really helps here is getting an OBDII scanner software package that will tell you trim readings at different RPMs so that we know if it's running rich/lean at what part of the power band. This will GREATLY help as the codes, themselves are fairly vague.

Thank you very much for the response. I recently replaced the intake boot. There was a vacume line attached to the bottom of it, and it was dry rotted off. I havent had the numbers reset and checked again since, but by what you say, it sounds like that was the problem. I will let everyone know. Thanks again.
