How to fix/reconnect check engine light???
 

OK - we've established that the "Check Engine" on my '96 328i is not working, as it doesn't flash on before starting nor is it illuminated even though there is a searching idle and I pulled codes (I'm thinking its a MAF sensor issue, but that's another story - I'm still going to try RedLine/Techron and premium petrol).

SO... are there any common failures of this "check engine" indicator lamp?

All of my other indicator lamps are functional, so I'm betting it's not as simple as a fuse/relay.

If so - any suggestions on how I might get to the lamp & wiring? Does the entire dash have to be pulled off, or might I get to it from underneath?

Again, I'm a newb when it comes to BMWs and common problems/issues - and this may not be a common problem, but any and all ideas will help. Thanks, and have a good night!

Don't quote me on this, but I think your OBD code reader should pull up something about it if the circuit or bulb is bad. I've heard stories of people putting tape over the bulb just to pass inspection, or to hide the light when selling the car. If that's the case, or if the bulb is really burnt out, then you'll have to remove the instrument panel to find out :(

Hey... I pulled the instrument cluster and behold - the bulb was not there! So somebody either pulled it to relieve themselves from seeing the amber check engine light, or somebody didn't twist the bulb far enough and it vibrated out and fell into the black abyss dash.

At least my check engine light is working. Relieved, yet not (since it's now ON!)
