window repair

i just bought a 1998 323is and both my driver side and passenger windows dont roll up they just make a knocking sound, i went to a mechanic and he said it would be about $400 for each window w/ parts and labor...so my question is does this seem like a reasonable price or should i find someone else to do it thanks

You can fix them yourself. I am sure there is a writeup on how to fix the plastic clips that attach to the window regulator..

Cool

do it yourself mate, i had the same problem, took me an hour and a half to fix it, the clips that were attached to the motorised arm had popped off due to the window not sitting in the channel properly, when you have taken the panel off, just take the pins out of the clips that are in the arm, regrease the slots an clips, slide the clips into the slots that are attached to the window, make sure the arm position is at the very bottom, then push the arm dowels into the clips and attach the pins, done

what did he say was broken......... as you hear the knocking sound i am guessing the motors still good...... it is a really easy fix if its just the clips.........

but since he said 400 im thinking your regulators might be damaged....... in that case it is easy again.........

just take your door panel off......and look its fairly simple

it should be an easy fix. If your up to it you can take pics along the way for others with the same issue.

Good luck

he never looked at the car he just said they regulators need replacing, but the windows roll down no problem and sometimes the right window will roll up.

yeah, you can do it yourself. its really easy to do. I've replaced mine before. Just be sure to install those Edit: We've been over this, everyone here can find BMW parts correctly and properly bolt in. This is to avoid problems in the future. It would also be good to check your window motor and regulator at the same time and see if there's a need for replacement. If you're not sure on how to do it , you may check on the manuals or have someone help you with the job.
Good luck

I am having an issue with my right side window too on my 1995 325i just hear the motor trying but it is now stuck in the 1/4 up postion. Sounds like I have too remove the door panel and then I can see the window and clips. My question is how do you remove the door panel any special tools needed? any advice would be great. Thanks
