lambda sensor

hi there

i have a problem with my e36 316i 1993 with m40 engine
wich gives black smock rich in fuel i took it to a mechanic and checked afm and enjectors and said all working fine but problem not solved after thet i star searching on web the solotion of it i find out to check lamda o2 sensor ok it was looks to me problem gona be solve but unfotunatly whan i went under the car for a look of lambda sensor i dint find it at all i only see a socket with 4 pins on top of it bmw plastic cap thats all
my question is why bmw didnt use lambda sensor in this model
and
if i buy a sensor put in my car will it work

Um, you should have a oxygen sensor... it's part number 11781734393. Wait, how do you have an M40 engine? The 316i is a M43... wha?

BMW didn't build them without oxygen sensors. Your car is probably running as weird as it is because it doesn't have one installed. The 316i (edit: which could be an M40, by the way -- BMW installed M40s in the 316i up until early 1994, even though some cars got M43s as early as Spring 1993) has one sensor, with the part number that mullethunter3 provided.

So, yes, if you install one, it will work and your car should run much better.

let me tell u whole story about my car (please ignore my languege mistaks)
it is bmw 316i sedan/saloon year 1992 or 1993 (my car registratin docs syas manufecturing year 1993 but whan i put vin in http://www.realoem.com/bmw/select.do for parts it shows 1992 u ppl can also check with my car vin FG23400) made by bmw south africa with m40 1596cc 4 cylinders 8 valve dme engine
car privetly imported to karachi pakistan in 1994 (coz that time they were no official bmw dealers in pakstan bmw came in pakistan after 2002 if i remember)

today i took her to local bmw workshop for an appintmet and they booked her for tuesday for a dyno tuning but im not setsfide form them coz faild to expline me why bmw dint fit oxegine sensor in my car models they just told me this model came like this u dont need to install asensor and i was forcing them to install in then they says they dont have in stock ok leave them after meeting them i realyz i know better then them about bmw
so guyes seges me about sensor and other things as well
like i fited a ihi rhb52 turbo and light wheight flywheel my self and plaininig next month to buy a gotech ecu and a thick copper gaskit for low compression ,forged piston and cut cam on same engine

hi again let me explain my car does not hav an oxygen sensor and here in pakistan there is no mechenic for bmw as i told you that car is giving me rich feul and you sugest me that i must put an oxygen sensor thats is ok i'll do that as soon as i get my sensor i just wana find out that i installed the turbo that is IHI RHB52 and light flywheel now i m thinking to install GoTech Pro X ECU that is afetr market product there is the website www.gotech.co.za so if you can cheke that and let me know will it support my engine or not and it will help my car to get better and faster or not or if you can sugest me what else can i do with my ride to get better i'll wait for your reply thanx

Finally his O2 Sensor issue is sorted out as he made a customized O2 Sensor with a bit help from yours truly. Its working great..
