Question 1999 318ti starter installation

i need to put a new starter on my 1999 318ti, are there any special tools/sockets reqiured/needed. any issues as far as removing lots of parts to get to it. i do not have any type of manual but have mechanical abilities. any help would be appreciated. thanks and GOD BLESS

my 318ti is a auto from the forum i get the sense that i will hav eto come from the topp to remove the starter? or with a automatic is it possible to do it from the bottom with out removing the cross brace? thanks for your response and GOD BLESS. bob

From what I read, (I've never done this before) it seems like you can only come from the bottom if you have a manual tranny, so going from the top would be your only option.
