The pump was probably stuck because the engine had overheated and probably melted the gasket.
And yes, working on your car is ust a matter of doing some research beforehand, getting a hold of a few tools, being patient, and jumping right into it.
Technically the metal ones are the best, because there is one out there designed for track use, and hard driving. The stewart waterpump, I think it flows a lot better, but for those of us that dont always drive like that, yeah a regular metal, or composite impeller is the way to go

Percussive maintenance is a good friend. Glad to hear you ripped that bitch off. What I have learned about my bimmer is that it is a machine that can be worked on by shade tree mechanics.
For example, I have to replace the valve cover gaskets and valley pan on my e39. I was quoted by a reputable independent mechanic $2400. I did some research, found several DIY, researched the parts and order all of them and then some. I plan to tackle the project this weekend or next. I guarantee that there will be times where I curse myself for venturing into this endeavor, but with some help from buddies and the internet, I will get it done, have saved money and feel manly at the same time!!! So, keep wrenching on your car.

That's definitely one of the more interesting ways of working on an engine that i've ever heard. Like my dad always used to tell me when we were fighting with my engine during the rebuild, "If you can't fix it with a sledge hammer, it ain't meant to be fixed."
