E36General discussion and technical help for (E36) 1992-1999 3 series cars. 318, 323, 325, 328.
so i bought a diff out of a '95 M3 and swapped it into my car. what a difference. my stock unit had 2.93 gears and open differential. the new unit has 3.15 gears and the standard 25% lockup limited slip. feels like a big fat guy finally got out of the car. also the handling characteristics are much better now with the limited slip and slides are much more controlled. only raised me about 400 rpms at 80 mph!
well a kid i know has the 95 M3 it came out of (about 90K on it) and he swapped his out for an automatic one cus it has somethin crazy like 3.75 gears in it. i paid 230 for it which is a great deal from what i've seen on the internet. i had a tech at work install it for me while i was workin for 75 bucks. he said it was in great shape and my old one he took out felt real shitty when he turned it by hand. the mounting arrangement was different on the output shafts for the M3 diff but they output shafts were completely interchangable. just pop the old out, pop the new in. the whole thing was said and done in about an hour and a half. its noticeably quicker and no more peg-leggin!! one of the easiest ways to notice the limited-slip is the old scenario when its wet or somethin and u turn from a stop sign and kick it out a bit. stock this was pretty much impossible in 1st gear. yesterday it was raining and i crept out from a stop sign makin a left and punched it real quick and it swung out beautifully! (if thats what ur into, which i am haha)
Definitely be careful with that LSD, whipping it around and everything.
On the Midwest Bimmer Festivus drive, my cousin, in a 95 M3, whipped it around a corner faster than he should have... he lost control and went completely sideways, coming about 2 feet from a curb at ~ 45 mph. Then he almost swung it into a ditch, then back to the curb, then ditch, curb, ditch, curb, ditch, then he finally gained control of it. Pretty scary, I was right behind him.
However, congrats on the LSD, have fun with it! (And a great buy! Damn!)

Umnitza now provides a mechanic to install all parts ordered right in the box! It's their new "Total customer service program" that will eliminate all the haters and keep incompetents from breaking **** and blaming the vendor! When you are all set simply call INS and they will pick him up free of charge.
Good switch man. I switched my 3.64 LSD for a 3.91 LSD off of a 325ix and the jump off the line and acceleration is awesome. Don't have too much fun with it
