Anyone been here/ done this?

Hi.

My son and I are putting a used motor into his 94 325i. Two things:

1- Replacing the rear main seal on used motor, noticed there is (at least an optical) groove on the crank where the seal rides. Haven't pulled the old one to compare, but does anyone know if this is normal, and how bad does it have to be before it leaks?

2- It overheated, warped his head. So far, I've found nothing that I've seen that could have caused it (not a prof mechanic, don't play one on TV either.) There was water in cyl #2. But no apparent break in head gasket. Q: Anyone got ideas based on experience?

Thanks in advance.

it could have overheated and that warped the head which caused the leakage, it may have overheated for a completely different reason however, that could be many things, possibly a water pump failure(very common for these cars) or simply a bad radiator(most likely not)

^^^ Yeah somewhere along the line the cooling system failed, causing the head to warp and resulting in leakage.

Can we see a pic of the grooved crank?
