fault codes '94 318is

Check it out: According to the Bentley manual, I should be able to read my fault codes by pressing the gas pedal 5 times withing five seconds with the ignition in the on position; the check engine light will then display the codes by blinking...It's not happening. Does anyone have instructive feedback on this matter, also what is a good inexpensive code reader for obdl?

Thanks.

It works, you just have to master the art Don't go too slow, don't go too fast, and make sure you push all the way to the floor each time, and take your foot off the pedal each time it goes up. It needs 5 deliberate, clear stomps to register. To my knowledge there is no code reader for OBD I BMW's.
