Munich, we have a problem....

...and the saga continues...

I started my posts a few days ago and described a noise coming from the rear axle. I had the rear checked and here's the result:

Someone, without the appropriate level of knowledge, has obviously tinkered with the Rear Carrier Assembly and done the shittiest job on the planet.

The Carrier Assembly is held in place by 4 bolts, the guy that worked on it, did it in a fashion that by now one of the bolts (right hand side - front bolt) is completely gone - obviously ripped out of the subframe and a second bolt, left hand side rear bolt has a visible tear mark surrounding the bolt, indicating that it might go next. In essence, the Carrier Assembly is really only held in place by 2 solid bolts. Thankfully, the bolts are across from one another or i'd be stranded already. However, all it might take is a pothole or a railway crossing and the other bolts & subframe take damage as well.
The repair estimate, since i don't even remotely know anyone that can weld, the shop i brought the car to quoted: $1855.43 inlc. Tax (YES! )
The car is drivable, but it something happens then there might be a chance that i end up carrying my rear assembly over my shoulders 'cause it might fall out.

I'm wondering if i should eBay a Rear Carrier Assembly and post a newspaper ad for a welder and hope i'll get away with it? Provided that the welder has enough knowledge to drop the current Carrier Assembly, fix the stripped bolt hole and then re-assemble and weld it. This is a total stretch, i know.

Honestly, while frustration takes over, i'm thankful for any and all help, tips and tricks.
I gotta keep the costs down, because if i end up paying $1855 i'd exceed the value of the vehicle and would go for broke.

Mike

Do a "craigs list" in your area for a welder before anything. Craigs list in most cities are free.

Oh, man, bummer news... Here's another suggestion, try collision repair places and car restoration places. Up side: chances are they're knowledgeable about doing such work and at either salvaging the existing carrier assembly, or locating another one. Down side: it might still cost $$ (but you might have a greater confidence level in the work). They might also suggest some leads for you. An Internet search might also pan out, at least in locating another assembly. Good luck.

Thanks for all the tips. Found a Carriage from an M3 on eBay - $200 +/- a few. The Craigslist idea is certainly a great one!

I did get the estimate from a body shop, since they have to work along the lines of codes and liability issues, they charge an arm and a leg for it. Frankly, if i'd go with their services, however good or bad they may be, i'd quickly exceed the actual value of the car, and that would definitely not be a wise move.
So, craigslist first, then the part then onwards to the next projects...'cause there sure are enough.
