can anybody enlighten me with this???
When I bought my 318is the engine was already replaced with m44 from m42.. aside from this all remained.
What I want to know is what could have happened that my rev limits to 4500rpm only. By the way I have auto tranny but even if I used manual mode it would stop at 4500.
Could there be a incompatible issues with the DME? One guy told me there are more sensors in the m44 than the m42. Well, I dont exactly know what transpired during the exchange.
The car's 0-60 is approx 10s and tops at 135mph. Anyways, i'm just puzzled and I really want to figure out how to correct this because I am planning to replace a manual tranny.

with tranny in neutral, will your engine simply rev up to more than 4500rpm? if it does, then it's the tranny, and all i could tell you is get a manual one in there. those auto trannies are sh*t. When i tried the manual override mode on a 92 325i, it made very little difference. the tranny still had like a mind of it's own.
If it doesnt, then it is probably a problem with the engine. Perhaps you should get the right DME for the engine you have. Basically its going to be a big pain in the a$$. Just cross your fingers that when you put it in neutral and rev the engine, it goes over 4.5 k's
read the fault codes or have the dealer or a reputable shop do it for you. DO NOT REV your car to 4500rpms in nuetral - that would be baaaaadddd. Transmission damaging baaaadddd. (unless "Maxim" is willing to buy you a new one for his explanation)

Which DME is controlling the rev.. that of the engine or tranny?.. I'll try to seek advice from my mechanic about reving the engine that high at neutral.. but I'll be VERY CAUTIOUS about it.

i still dont get what's wrong with revving the engine high in neutral. I do it with mine all the time (its a standard though). Especially to get the chicks to look at my car. Really gets them looking at it, which gets them into it, which gets me bangin' them.
Oh and by the way.....at higher rpm's, in first and especailly in second gear my stock intake (well at least I think it's the stock intake) that does the whistling sound. Sounds just like a turbo. Really sexy. A bunch of guys who first saw it race ACTUALLY though it was turbocharged, and were completely shocked when I popped the hood for them to reveal a completely stock setup....without even a CAI. It was sweet. But yeah anyway chicks love my car, and high RPM's are good.

Maybe you have a manual tranny, I will not doubt reving it up either. Anyway I already revved mine and yeah it stopped at 4500rpm
with an automatic, I'd only recommend revving in P-Mode.
Not in Neutral.
And I don't even recommend doing it at all. Although I do it sometimes, but only a couple times a year at parties.

I remembered when you put in a performance chip, one of the things it will do is raise your rev limit. So I presuppose it is the engine dme that controls the rev.
On the otherhand it is the tranny dme that controls the shift point, but obviously only for auto tranny..
I hope I could borrow a m44 dme in the shop and check if my supposition is correct.

Does anyone of you had an engine swap? Well, I found a chip sold at Turner Motorsport which is designed for "speed sensor delete". A common problem with engine conversion, which as a result would be an early shift points.
