Cold Air + Scoop?
I never really liked the Dinan cold air intake because of how low it goes. That is going to be a real problem in our harsh canadian climate. Yesterday at a streetracing meet I saw a guy with another 325i who had a K&N intake which looked kinda like this:
basically it was the isolated one. I think I am sold for getting the same one he had. it is probably going to run me close to 300 bucks. The only thing I didn not quite like, was that the are where the filter is is quite isolated, and it will be hard for air to make it's way in there. Removing the headlight would help, but that is only a short-term racing solution.
Adding a scoop on the hood by the left headlight sounds like the best way to get some massive airflow in there. Now I fully understand that adding a scoop (especially a non-symmetrical one) to an already perfect car is a big risk, but I think I can kind of see myself doing that. Would you guys think of it as a good idea? Would it help my 1/4 mile time, as well as my top speed?
Now I already do have a DINAN chip that i took out, because I enede up LOSING power at high RPM's, probably due to engine being flooded with gas and not enough air in there.
By the way, I did some drag racing last night. I got beaten by an 03 sentra se-r, and the 2006 mustang (non-gt version), but they barely beat me, and I was creeping onto the mustang at high speed. THere was a fidderence of maybe 1/4 of a car's length. Hopefully getting the chip back in and having it work due to intake would change the outcome next time, eh?
I'm not sold on your theory. A naturally aspirated engine will only draw as much air as it needs, and that occurs by the vacuum created by the pistons; a lot of which is held back by the throttle. You can't dump more in for improvement, and that compartment is not vacuum sealed. Thus, it's the density of air, not the volume that is critical, and that's why it's isolated from the heat of the engine . . cooler air is denser.

The dinan intake doesn't go that low unless your car is lowered substantially, I am slightly lowered with the cosmos intake which is basically the same length and have driven through plenty of puddles, etc.

well my current intake system (stock one) DOES get the air from outside the vehicle (through the grille). what would make that different from a coldair intake?
I don't really understand it anyways, what's the difference between a cold-air intake and a normal air intake anyways?
The CAIs are a more free flowing air intake vs the enclosed factory box air cleaner. (they do allow a min.more air which can benefit mileage and a very small increase in performance) most folks add them for performance and the "coolness factor" sound at the exhaust. On the negative side they require more frequent cleaning/filter replacement and they are not "winter weather friendly"
To "MAX" what the hell are you drag racing a BMW for? It's made as a performance handling car - that's going to be an expensive learning curve when you puke your diff doing a hole-shot.

Well, the reason i drag race the car is because it is really the only type of racing you can do on the street without getting in major trouble, and because it is pretty much the only way nowadays to prove that your car is better.
I am really impressed with how my car actually owns the sh*t out of older non-GT mustang, but I need it to beat the 2006 one to show the guy (whos in over his head with ford pride) that he wasted his 30+ thousand.

Think about what you just wrote... "the only type of racing you can do without getting in major trouble?" Are you out of your skull??? What do consider major trouble? Murder? Terrorist Bombing, Drive By Shootings?
You can kill somone including yourself - you're hurling a 3000+lb vehicle down a street that ANYWHERE along the line someone can step out, cross your path or worse a part failure sending you into outer space. Don't give me any excuses - because there isn't a viable one for street racing. When you kill someone by accident and convicted of "vehicular homicide" try pleading the above statement - that'll get you an additional stay in a mental institute!

whoa c1apton, settle down there man.
when I seriously drag race, we do it at night, we go in the industrial area and ACTUALLY block off a road. Racing the car around corners IS definitely alot more dangerous, because when your pushing your car around a turn, shit happens. nothing can happen in a straight line on a blocked off road. Sometimes the spontaneous races happen off a light, but come on......if the other guy is revving your engine at you and thinks his honda can tackle your car, who wouldn't put their foot down. Especially when chick are involved. When you have one riding shotgun, and so does he, and stuff like that happens, only one person is getting laid that night, and I'd rather be the person.

You know what, when you or the other guy lose control of that vehicle and wreck, and while you total that car shoot your girl out of the car and she dies or becomes a vegetable, who's gonna get laid then. Street racing, in whatever form way or shape that you want to put it in is still ILLEGAL . When you block off a road, that is obstructing the flow of traffic, even if no one is driving on it at that time of night. Does the police come and close the road for you?!?!?!?! Get some sense here. If you need to do that to prove to a girl that you are the shit, you need to do one of two things:
1. Dump the bitch, she ain't worth the accident that can happen or the damage that you will do to your vehicle, cause when it pops a piston, there isn't any amount of laying that will get it fixed and SHE AIN'T GONNA HELP YOU EITHER!!!!!
2. Sell your car to someone that will take care of it and use it responsibly.
Racing needs to be left at the racetrack and not be done ON THE STREETS. I have had friends die because of street racing and to give you an example:
One good friend of mine is a paraplegic with a vehicular homicide conviction after he lost control of his car street racing and ejected a friend that was riding with him and caused damages to 5 cars that were there and over 15 injured (3 critical) back in 2004 in Texas. He ruined his family both financially and emotionally because of his urge to "street race".
The only "serious racing" should be done at a track. And YES YOU CAN GET INTO MAJOR TROUBLE FOR STREET RACING, RECKLESS ENDANGERMENT AND RECKLESS DRIVING TO START WITH!!
And if you don't believe this 39 year old that does race at tracks, ask someone that was convicted of street racing and see how they feel now. I have one in my office that got caught in Kentucky, $10000 fine and lost his license for 5 years(he's still paying the $10000 too). And then the Army(he is a Soldier) reduced him in rank from Sergeant to Specialist for Conduct detrimental to the good order and discipline of the US Army.
IT'S NOT WORTH IT!!!!!

Max, - like I said NO EXCUSES - maybe in your little "pea-brain" that explanation holds water, but anyone with sanity will drop the couple of bucks and do it SAFELY on a track. Try telling your Insurance co your explanation - that'll void your policy while you're laid up in some hospital.
There are tracks for both types of racing. They are also equipped for fire hazards, accidents & have safety people. Plus they require safety equipment like a helmet,etc... - not some bubble headed bitch in the passenger seat. If you need to get laid so, bad get a whore.

ive seen people racing in an industrial park recently when I drove by one with it blocked off, the thing is people work at those places all day so if one calls in the cop and you have the roads blocked off you are fucked.. Those hondas with the loud mufflers are a waste of gas to race.

I've been to these illegal street race meets here in the uk, many years ago and only as a spectator. At one of the meets a kid in a ford decided to show off and turned on the nitrous oxide, he lost control and hospitalised 5 people who were just watching, he tried to run away from the wreck but the crowd held him until the cops got there, he's lucky they didn't lynch him.
Illegal street racing or drag racing is a big no no, its just a matter of time maxim before you or somebody else gets killed or seriously injured just for the sake of your foolish pride and the need to show off.
