Unhappy Car Problems... help

Hey guys... i have a 1991 E36 325I (auto) i imported from japan [ they started importing these to the US in 1992... but they were first avalible in 1991 in japan ] ... sweet car.. anyway i was heading to a dance, and i stoped at a set of tracks. and then kept going... got around 20 feet.. then it stalled.... i was trying to figure out why and how a automatic stalls ... so i was close to a friends house. somehow managed to coast it into his driveway. so i poped it in park.. and tried starting it..and it just sat there with the starter cranking..

so after everything was said and done with the next day i came back to check things out.. there was fuel presure in the lines.. so i'm guessing the fuel pump is working.. i took a mutimeter and checked the ports to the coils and when the key is on they have power sent to them.. but the plugs don't spark.. the light is on that has a gear/sproket with an exclimation mark in the middle, so i'm thinking it's electrical... but i have no idea what to do... and no one around has a diagnostics tool/scanner.... so i don't know what to check or do, i don't have my manuel yet it was coming in the mail... but i did check the crankshaft sensor, it's at 504.9Ohms but... i don't know what it's supost to be at.... hoping for some help. please it'd be great.

I have absolutely no personal experience with my car dying, but check the alternator. Maybe.

have you done some tune-up lately? I guess it would be best to checked all your bmw parts to see what might be wrong.. check the alternator, battery, starter, etc.. keep us posted of what other things did you notice.. good luck

First, chk to see if battery is charged. The simplest test is to turn on headlights--if bright, usually means battery is OK. Even so, once the engine is running, all electrical power is provided by alternator, not battery. If you were experiencing electrical failure, you would have noticed lights would begin to dim; even those in cab and/or instrument pane. Question: does starter turn engine over? If so, look elsewhere for problem rather than basic electrical system.

You may be experiencing cmptr failure. Depending on what may have failed, you could have some systems ok, and others failed. Diagnosing cmptr can be a bitch without proper reader.

Question: How did you verify fuel pressure? If you bled down pressure you may need to re-pressurize; but you are correct that pressure in the fuel rail usually means no problem with fuel delivery.

If your engine has separate coils for each cyl...be very careful, these things can deliver one helluva jolt. Personally, I wouldn't futz around them with ignition switch on.

Well, I don't think I've been too much help; not enough info. BTW, I am retired auto tech. Just remember all an engine needs is air, fuel and spark.

Good Luck James in Colorado
