I've never seen or heard of this being done before.
You have an e36, that is a key to an e46.
The e46 key has an EWS chip, so I don't know if you can do that.
If you are due, you can do it but the service lights won't go away until you take it to the dealer or get a special tool to switch it off.
If you are doing all this stuff, you should take it to the dealer...it would make things alot less complicated. And if they screw up, they'll fix it for free.

i know that my e36 can reset codes itself in the computer. i found this out when my battery blew up and when i put another one in my car wouldnt start and this after market alarm i didnt know i had kept going off. so when i found the toggle for the alarm i turned it off, then i turned my switch on and pressed the code button in the dash computer followed by the reset button. this starts a count down from 15 minutes. when it gets done you set the time and date and stuff and then itll start up. so if you do the oil yourself take your battery cable loose for a minute and then hook it up and do the code reset, it should set everything without a tool. as for the key, let the dealer do it. thats the best way to go i think.

I think you can reset your service lights by earthing out pin 7 on the onboard plug in located in your engine bay, turn ignition off and earth out pin 7 then turn ignition on but don't start the car and count to 15 secs then turn off ignition and remove earth wire from pin 7.. as for the key sorry can't help you there.
