1992 381i Sedan Engine Problem

On my 381i when starting it sometimes it seems to backfire and blow off the upper or lower idle control valve hoses. The last time it did this it blew a hole in the Air Mass Meter boot. I am not sure what is causing this problem. This is intermittent and varies how often in consesion it happens. Any help is apprciated.

Thanks!

just from the backfire it sounds like you have a timing problem, how does the car run otherwise?

The engine runs fine once it starts and the hoses stay on!

sometimes a backfire thru induction is caused by lean mixture--at least in normally aspirated motors. Since mixture is controlled by OB computer, which relies on input from a number of sensors, diagnosis may be difficult without proper instrumentation. Swapping parts is usually not a good way to work, but you might want to test/replace Oxy sensors.
