Timing a 93 318is
Hey guys, I am new to this forum, and I am in need of help. I purchased a 1993 318is with some minor problems. They have since grown, and I am in to far to leave it now. I have replaced the radiator, water pump and head gasket. A local speed shop did the head work, and I am now putting it back together. My question is, What is the correct way to time this engine? I have read about the whole pinning of the flywheel and locking down the cams. I have done this and still have valves contacting pistons. The dealer wants $900 to tear it down and retime it. They said that timing this engine (m42) has nothing to do with the flywheel and uses marks off the crankshaft upfront. Anyone know anything about this. I have found a little arrow on the harmonic balancer, and another arrow on the block. If they are lined up, that is TDC. I have verified that, and am now wondering if that is more accurate than the flywheel thing. My flywheel does not have a hole in it, more of a dimple. Any experience on this. I have the 101 projects book, and that has left me short of success. Any thoughts? |
