Left side rear wheel clunking noise ??
Just put new tires on all around, Proxies were to loud. Now I hear a clunking noise from the left rear when turning to the right, speed of the clunking noise varies with the speed of the car. Straight line and left turns are fine, only right turns, Tires are balanced fine and the rims are not bent.
Possible rear wheel bearing? Thanks for any help you may have. |
Wheel bearing is my 1st thought, what do you mean with a clunking noise? Migt want to take off the suspected wheel and take a look around and make sure nothing looks wrong.
Could this also be a strut or worn shock mount? |

might be shock tower mount?
my mechanic just turned that wheel bearing seperatly and listened to it. Made a slight grinding noise when my bearing was out. |
I had a noise like that on my German Specs E30 and it turned out to be my subframe bushing:bawling :bawling :bawling :bawling (severe pain in the butt). I'm not well versed on yours but if you have subframe bushings, check those too.

brushings, shocks, bearings. Could be those. Could be something else.

yea maybe the rear shock mount, its a common problem with an easy fix(they arent too bad, just hope that is what the problem is)
|
when the shock mount went on my E30 m3 it was more of a sqeaking sound coming from the rear.

double check & make sure your left rear wheel is seated properly against rotor - flush. If they hang up on center lip it can put excessive pressure on lugs. (it's something really easy to overlook)

Thanks for all the suggestions,
I jacked it up and can wiggle the rear tire about 2-3 mm also a noticable noise when I rotate the wheel, so I am pretty sure the bearing is scrap, I will be tackeling that tonight as the parts have come in, and I bought the proper tools to do the job. Will let you know tomorrow how I make out. (if there is no up date I may be stuck under the car) lol Also will the rear tires need to be aligined after this? If so I may change the other rear bearing as it has 192,000 on it. Although the right one sounds and feels fine. |
Bearing was bad 1 side of the double race was bad, When I pressed it out it fell apart, It is quite a DIY project but in total about 6 hours, taking time to mark and properly torque everything. What a difference in noise it is so quite the only thing I hear is the purr og the engine. Thanks again for all the helpful suggestions, I checked out all the items while under the car, and it looks good.
Again Thank you John |
