If I remember correctly, that is what BMW uses. I have been using Mobil1 full synthetic for two years, if you care to know.

Castrol sounds right, I believe the dealer has given me that in the past.

synth > dino

The dealerships only stock synthetic. They use Castrol. Even the oil that says BMW on the label is rebadged Castrol.

If you're going to stick with dino oil, then youst get any good oil, either Castrol of Mobil1, and be sure to keep your oil changes regular, in the 3k mile interval.

Just to share my experience: I switched to synthetic as soon as I got the car. It had never seen sythetic in its first 169,000 miles. I have no leaks, and I only change my oil every 6000 miles or six months, whcihever comes first. I am now at 203,000 miles.

well, in that case, thanks for the advice, i will probably go with either castrol synthetic or mobil 1

my car is at 202k, recently changed pan gasket, only used non synthetic oil since its been in my hands, should i stick with it or if i change to synthetic will i see any change in engine behavior?

since synthetic is "thinner" would that be a problem for my "old" engine's seals and gaskets and what not?

thanx :adance

As an older car it is possible that you will see more leaks from the synthetic but not everyone has problems with it. I think i will keep using dino in mine until i need a new engine.

by the way, how much oil does the engine take, is it 6.9 quarts or 7.5?

This use to be the case, but synthetics have improved and aren't as "thin". As long as your car isn't prone to burning oil and doesn't show signs of seepage, I wouldn't hestitate switching to a good name brand syn.

6.9, although I've read a thread elsewhere about a handful of people needing more . . I have no idea how that happens.
