To drill or not to drill...
 

I started work on renovating my drive train last night. I am replacing the flex disc, new uuc trani mounts and enforcers new center bearing and replacing the o ring on the transmission output shaft. Plus changing the trani oli and filter.

Anyway I have discovered that the new flex disc has 12mm holes for the bolts and the old one has 10mm holes... It will take two weeks to ship a replacement to Fiji so I am considering enlarging the holes on the output flange and the driveshaft and using the new disc anyway.

There's not heaps of material on the flanges but they should accomodate bigger holes. Is this a completely stupid idea? Will it throw the ballance out on the drive shaft? Thoughts please...

Don't do it, wait for the correct part. It may not look like a big deal, but these parts take on a lot of stress from the torque applied. If you mess up the balance or the integrity of the flanges, that could be very costly. Besides, I think you'll probably have a real hard time drilling them; I'm guessing they're hardened steel.

I wouldn't do it either, just wait for the right part.

:videogameOk point taken. I was going to take it to the machine shop down the road but I guess if there is a chance it can get f$$ked it propbally will. Darn it.

I ll try the local stealer for the part but I doubt they have it in stock.

I wonder if reasembling with the cracked disk is equally a bad idea. Now that I have the new trani mounts in, there is probally less stress on the disk...:videogame

Re-using old disc is bad idea too - it's still has to deal with stress of acceleration & deceleration (not to mention what it can do more damage) - just wait until you can get the right one.

Yeah it sucks but tiny imperfections in parts like that under a lot of stress turn in to problems later.

dont reckon you'd do any harm with the old disk if you drove VERY gently, no hoofing, A to B transport only.

Depends on whether the crack is all the way through. if it goes suddenly would the flanges on the driveshaft and output shaft from gearbox be damaged first?

ok its all back together now. It meant traipsing around in crapy Fiji taxis for three weeks while the car sat on stands (my old rims lol) and I waited for the correct part to arrive but it was worth it.

I ve now got a slight vibration around 40-60kms which could mean i didnt line up the spline correctly by one notch or the new mounts are not lined up properly.

I also did micro filter change and what a huge difference to the a/c! It works!!

The only worry is I did all the work with out a torque wrench so I hope it doesnt all fall apart too soon...
