How do I remove my tail light lens?
I have a 1996 328i sedan with a cracked tail light lens. I have a new tail light to replace it with, but I don't know how to take out the old one. How do I remove my tail light?
They are removed from inside the trunk. You'll see a plastic cover. Remove those, then remove the bulbs by twisting the sockets. Disconnect the wiring harness. Then remove the nuts that hold the lens to the car.

I don't think they're 30mm, maybe more like 8, unless they changed things from '95, which is my model year. In any event, once you remove them, you may need to take a rubber hammer to hit the screw studs with, as the rubber gasket around the lens can form quite a tight seal that could make merely pushing it out a bit of a task. Once out, wash the lip and hit with some wax, check for any rust that may have crept in.
OKAY OKAY 30mm IS TOO BIG! it was late and I wasn't thinking. Either way there are nuts of a certain size that once removed allow the tail light to slide right out.
Wow . . I can't believe there's even a discussion about size of nuts. Just open the trunk for the love of god . . if you can't figure it out on your own . .
(Edit, next morning) . . Sorry, That was mean. Been in a weird fit lately, think I need anger management.
