Camshaft sensor on e36 318is 97' need help urgent

My Brother drives a 318is 97' and he's been noticing for around 4 months a check engine light coming on and off, sometimes it'll be on for a week or a day, just depends. He said he's never noticed anything wrong with how the car drives or feels, and I was looking around the forums and saw the thread about the dirty wiring harness. that could cause these faults.

he took it a to a local bmw mechanic . they said the camshaft sensor was bad (but he just read the codes thats all). and I was skeptical about replacing the entire sensor (which their saying is gonna cost 300 bucks to replace)

but this website talked about cleaning the wiring harness that might fix this problem. what would I clean it with and where is the wiring harness at.

And whats your opinion...bad sensor, or wiring harness, remember it's been doing it for 4 months and he hasnt noticed anything.
