E36General discussion and technical help for (E36) 1992-1999 3 series cars. 318, 323, 325, 328.
now as it should, my brake sensor light came on when i needed new brakes, i got new brakes but no new sensor. is there an easy way to reset the light or just eliminate the power to it? also my fog light indicator light is out and has been for quite some time... what is that tied into in the wiring?

There are sensors at the front left and right rear for the brake pads. You should just be able to get new ones and plug them into the right spot on the pads and then connect it after you remove the old sensor . I usually pay $5 or so for a new one, its a pretty easy and cheap fix, espcailly if you change your own pads.

Usually your old sensors are NOT reusable if they've been worn into (they're shorted across triggering the light) as far as the fog light indicator - have you tried a bulb???
yea i know how the sensors work i was wondering if they are simple enough that i can just cut somethin to "unshort" it b/c i know when my brakes are bad, id rather not bother wth new sensors every change. and for the fog light no i havent tried a bulb, does the cluster come out easily to change it?

Yes and no... on my car the cluster is held in w/ 3 screws along the top underside (top of cluster), then you just pull the top forward, slide the botton out, turn the steering wheel left while pulling the cluster out that way (after unhooking the wires - be sure to note placement of individual bulbs and single wires.) Reinstalling it is just the opposite. Takes a little patience and practice, but once you do it a couple times it's actually quite simple.
When removing the cluster, make sure you have your battery unhooked if you take off the steering wheel. If you turn on your key without an airbag hooked up you will have another light problem. The ABS light.
The cluster can be removed without removing the steering wheel but it is a pain in the ASS!

You could just get a sensor plug it in and then tie it out of the way, I am currently doing that on my left front, because the dealer gave me a sensor that wouldn't fit on my pad.
ok cool thanks fellas, i like the idea about tyin the sensor away so the thing doesnt need to keep getting replaced. my airbag light has been on since i got the car, but i know that could be the result of a lot of different things so i havent looked into it yet

cut the wire leading to the brakes in front left and right rear. inside the wire are 2 wires, so stick them together and the problem is solved, you will never see again the brake sensor light.

Why disable a useful, safety related system for the sake of a few dollars? Why not remove that pesky ABS system & take the air bag out & toss it?
Fix it right, these are highly engineered vehicles, pay it respect & fix it. Plenty of idiots now own these cars, chrome wheels, subwoofers, and endless clear/smoke/LED/angel eye light masturbation.
Just for clarification, if you don't want to replace the sensors, don't wait till they go off to get new pads It's as simple as inspecting your brake pads and replacing them before they wear down enough the trigger the sensor. The minimum specified thickness for an E36 is 5/64". Thus you should replace them before that- keeping them to about 1/8" or thicker would be a good rule of thumb.

Sometime my brake sensors light up esp when it rains heavily and when i drive througha puddle. But it shuts off automatically. I've checked these sensors and my wheel rotors don't seem to have the same thickness in the fronts. the left front is 2.5mm+- thinner than the other. The car brakes in a straight line though...
