rear ix drive shaft probs

Hey guys my rear u joint is bad on my 5spd ix. BMW only sells the shaft as a unit with staked in u joints for a lot of$$$$$. Anyone out there repair one of these. Also I'm curious. once I remove rear shaft is it possible to start and move the car around my garage and parking lot or will it damage it?? Some allwheel drives you can and some you're not supposed to.
Thanks

I'd contact a local driveline shop (IE: Clutch & U-Joint, etc..) before removing the shaft - some of those have to be rebalanced before being reinstalled. I'd first find someone who can do the joint replacement, then ask them about being able to shuffle car around minus one shaft before attempting it
